Engine Creative has created a range of digital media solutions to help the British Library increase their online presence and promote their enhanced product and service offering.
The British Library is the national library of the UK and one of the biggest in the world. Treasures include the Magna Carta, Leonardo da Vinci's notebook and original Beatles manuscripts. The British Library serves business and industry, researchers, academics and students, in the UK and worldwide.
Online banners and email marketing
Engine Creative was initially approached by the Library to develop internal Flash banners for the range of Document Supply Services which much of the new site redevelopment was aimed at promoting. The range of banners utilise the existing guidelines with slick animation to inform users of the available services. In addition, Engine Creative has designed and developed a new set of email templates for the online shop and Images Online service.
Open Source CMS development
Engine Creative was also selected to design and develop their Publishing website after a competitive tender process. The brief included not only creative design but also creation of a clearly defined information architecture and a strategy for delivering and maintaining the site.
Engine Creative's approach to the development of this important project for the Library was based on the tight deadlines outlined and also the need to offer a value for money solution. The site was developed and integrated with Drupal 6, a proven Open Source CMS, that has a large developer community and is in active development.
Design wise, the site follows the newly implemented brand guidelines and the creative and layout development has evolved based on the commercial requirements of the publishing operation, pushing specific services through graphic prioritisation and positioning and editing and streamlining content where applicable.
We delivered the fully hosted and sustainable solution for the Library to give administrators complete control over content and page templates and the choice of Drupal has ensured that the site was delivered on budget and within the timescales outlined without compromising on quality, user experience or flexibility.
Engine Creative has also worked with the Library to develop a brand and marketing collateral for their Turning The Pages service; a toolkit that allows libraries and museums to put entire collections of books online in a compelling 3D environment, with a suite of useful tools to aid learning.
