For those that think the iPad is just a big iPod Touch well they need to think again. The laptop is great, but once you start using the touch screen on the iPad, everything else just seems a little contrived.

This week, Engine Creative’s digital team had the pleasure of attending the Future of Web Design conference in London. For those that don’t already know, the Future of Web Design, or FOWD as it is affectionately known, is one of the premier conferences for web designers and other web professionals in the United Kingdom. Some of the highlights included detailed HTML 5 talks by Peter Lubbers and Bruce Lawson, some fascinating takes on design by Aarron Walter & Simon Collison, and forward thinking business strategy talks by Paul Boag & Brett Welch.

I've recently been putting the Canon 7D through its time-lapse paces with a couple of exterior time-lapses shot at Windsor Great Park. Both were shot RAW and colour graded in Adobe After Effects CS4 with Colorista.

This R&D test render of a Lego animation was created in Cinema 4D using the Mograph volume effector. It's a powerful tool within Cinema 4D that allows you to more accurately control where you want your clones to appear (amongst other things). This effector defines its range of influence based on spatial polygonal objects. All clones that lie within a given objects volume will be influenced by this effector.

Every Thursday, somebody cooks lunch for everyone. Obviously this was easier when there were just a few of us, but as we have grown over the years it gets decidedly more tricky. But because we think it is important to relax with each other as well as work hard, Cooking Thursday is still going strong and it is one of our proudest traditions.

We are currently doing a number of projects involving the use of Cinema 4D, our favourite 3D imaging and animation software. One of the great things about the software is the active user community and the large number of plug-ins available.

One of my recent new favourites is Xbreaker. This plugin enables you to fracture objects. The developers of Xbreaker, Pariah Studios set up a little contest to encourage people to experiment with the software.

In my opinion, anyone designing for digital projects would find it beneficial to understand the practicalities that go into the build and development of the site. The more you know about a subject the more your can exploit its advantages and better meet the needs of the client.

As someone who has predominantly used Macs for the last 20 years for learning, professional and personal use it has always amazed and frustrated me that they are not used more widely in UK schools. Thankfully, I've now started to see the tide turn with a growing number of educators realising that there is more (much, much more) to the world of ICT in education than PCs and Microsoft Office.
